Concert Coordinator

Concert Coordinator needed! Everyone enjoys the 9-week summer concert series in Browne's Addition. Now, we need a concert coordinator to work with the executive council to organize next year's 2010 series. We are looking for someone to provide some vision and leadership to help us in the ongoing process of deciding the future direction for the concert series. We are willing to pay a stipend for this sort of leadership. Will you step forward? If you even think you might be interested, contact MaryLou at mlsproul@gmail.com. Don't let the concert series fall by the wayside. Spread the word.

There's No Place Like Home

You Live in One of the Nation's 10 Greatest Neighborhoods

Here are some pictures from our gathering Wed night at the MAC.  Congrats to MaryLou Sproul who worked so hard along with Nikole Coleman from the Spokane City Planning Department to have Browne's Addition named as one of the nation's 10 Greatest Neighborhoods for 2009 by the American Planning Association.  This is an honor we can all be proud of.

In the pictures below Mayor Mary Verner announces the award as Leroy Eadie, acting Parks Director, and Jo Anne Wright, acting Planning Director, present the citation to MaryLou Sproul who turned the idea into action.

Learn more here... http://www.planning.org/ncpm
And here...http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2009/oct/07/brownes-addition-honored-nationally/

Another presentation of this award will take place at Monday's city council meeting.

Browne's Addition Gathering this Wed

The Browne's Addition Neighborhood Council and Steering Committee will be convening on Wed night, Oct 7 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the MAC (Museum of Arts and Culture).

We will be looking at the Human Services proposals for our Community Development allocation, reviewing the just passed concert series and planning for the next one, and discussing how the new bus line/schedule is working.

There is also a rumor there might be some VIPs with us (besides you, of course) to make a special presentation to the neighborhood.

This is no ordinary gathering, so don't miss it!

First Gathering of the Fall this Wed

The First Gathering of the Fall (so to speak) for the Browne's Addition Neighborhood will be this Wed, Sept 2 at 6:30 at the Museum of Arts and Culture.

We will have a special presentation from Becky Niles of First Call For Help to tell us how we can identify services in the community and connect our neighbors (and ourselves, perhaps) with the social and human services that might be of some support.

We will also begin some brainstorming on the services and programs we as a neighborhood will want to support through our own community development funding we are allocated annually.

We look forward to seeing you all this Wed!

Concert Series

Well, the first concert of the season will be upon  us this Thursday.  This first one will begin with a "Big Check Ceremony" with the Spokane Parks Foundation who generously supported us.  It would be great to have a lot of neighborhood support at this first meeting to allow us ALL to say thank  you.

We also have a need for concert "stewards" during the concerts.  These are just neighborhood volunteers who walk around the concert, answer questions, help with passing the hat, and assist with cleaning up etc.  There is not a lot to it, but it is very important work and we need a few good neighbors to help us, three for every concert.

Do you feel as if you could help and serve as a steward for one of the concerts?

If so, please contact our Concert Series Coordinator,

Christine White

Thank  you!

COP Shop

Good morning,
I am emailing a request, if you would let your neighborhood council members know that Greater Spokane C.O.P.S. at N. 120 Stevens needs volunteers who are willing to work at the COP Shop.  This is your COP Shop that is now located in the beautiful and historic 1889 building at N. 120 Stevens on the second floor.  We need volunteers who are willing to gift 12 hours a month and willing to work the front desk to help the community in problem solving their concerns and issues.
What is required to become a Spokane C.O.P.S. volunteer is the following:
Complete a Spokane C.O.P.S. application form
Pass a criminal background check
Participate in an interview with the COP Shop NRO and a volunteer.
Participate in mentoring at the COP Shop to learn front desk job duties, and
Complete a twelve hour volunteer orientation within one year of application.  The next volunteer orientation class will be held in October 2009.

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for consideration of my request.

WHY:

  • Because the beautiful giants that grace the Spokane landscape are nearing the end of their natural lives.
  • Because city policy prohibits replacing large trees in many streets where they now flourish.
  • Because we want to continue the vision of city leaders who planted 80,000 trees a century ago, so that we could enjoy their beauty and shade today.

Monthly Gathering Wednesday--something different

Pies on Us! Pie's On Us! Pies' On Us!

This Wednesday, June 3, from 6:30 to 8:00 in the evening we will be having our monthly Browne's Addition Neighborhood Council/Steering Committee gathering.  To mark the mid point of the year, we are pulling together the needs and ideas folks identified at the Holiday Party/Annual Meeting and checking our progress.  If  you have a new project idea come share that as well.

This will be very informal and also a chance for us all to socialize a little.  Soooo, we are having pie and coffee (or other) social as well.  So come ready for something yummy and something interesting!

(For those who like to multitask:  You can kill two birds with one stone by inviting your neighbors "out for dessert" this Wednesday evening.  Then bring them to the MAC for our gathering!  Imagine the looks on their faces!)

We meet at the MAC, the Museum of Arts and Culture, 2316 First, downstairs in the Gilkey Room (just go in the main entrance).  We are always out by 8:00.

Remember, FREE PIE to the first 2,000 neighbors in attendance!

Gathering May 6--Sustanability

The month's Browne's Addition Neighborhood Council gathering promises to be particularly interesting.  We will be discussing the issue of "Sustainability".  It's a term we hear a lot of lately, and it no doubt has 6 billion definitions.

But we are looking at the issue from a neighborhood and personal perspective.  We will have representatives from the Mayor's Sustainability Action Plan, Avista, and community garders, among others.

This should be a lot of fun, fast paced, and will give folk who attend some good tools to take with them.

Please plan to attend:

March Neighborhood Council Meeting

The Browne's Addition Neighborhood Council will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the MAC in Browne's Addition.  This month's meeting will include a presentation on the design and status of our neighborhood's new OVERLOOK PARK (the park area bordering the cliff on Coeur d'Alene Street at the west end of the neighborhood).

This is an opportunity for all neighborhood residents to provide input to the design before it is finalized and before construction begins this Spring.  This park will be a wonderful new asset for the neighborhood, and will include the repair of the trail down the cliff.

We will also be discussing the summer's concert series in Coeur d' Alene Park and the neighborhood clean up program scheduled for this spring.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday evening!

Attend the next Neighborhood Council Meeting!

The next Browne's Addition Neighborhood Council (BANC) meeting is Wednesday, February 4 at 6:30 at the MAC. The agenda for the February meeting includes:

1) City Council Presentation: BANC's President, Doug Overlock, gave a slideshow presentation to the Spokane City Council recently that gives an overview of the BANC activities and the neighborhood in general. This wonderful presentation is a great overview, and Doug will give the presentation at this meeting as an introduction for new attendees.

2) Friends of the Falls (pending): We have scheduled a presentation by Friends of the Falls on the aspects of the overall Spokane River Gorge Project that relate to residents of Browne's Addition.

3) Second Harvest: As part of an ongoing effort to introduce those service organizations supported by the BANC, Second Harvest will discuss their activities and introduce opportunities for volunteers. We plan to have other organizations give similar presentations at later meetings.

Please plan to attend this meeting and help us make Browne's Addition a better place to live. We look forward to seeing you there!

Overlook Park Concept Designs

SPVV Overlook Park Presentation

1/17/09 Neighborhood Council Meeting Followup

A few anouncements from the January Neighborhood council Meeting:

  • Christine White will be the coordinator for the summer 2009 concert series.

  • The goal for the coming year is to focus the monthly meetings on high interest topics

  • Envision Spokane is a neighborhood community group that wants to revise the city charter. Information about their plan is available to pick up after the meeting. They might be presenting at a later date.

The neighborhood also had amazing presentation from Sherry Pratt Van Voris. Here is the background:

The landscape architects, Sherry Pratt Van Voorhis, were contracted by the Parks Department to prepare a plan that addresses the Overlook Park area. They presented some ideas and design concepts and asked for feedback from the neighborhood residents. This is not a construction document but just a design. It’s part of the public process to get input from the neighborhood.
The Overlook Park and West Bluff area is part of the Great Gorge master plan. The gorge plan has not been adopted by the city but this design sets the groundwork for adopting and developing this area. There is some talk about the economic development of the gorge such as a golf course, a dog park, and a white water park. Two concepts for the development of the park at the top of the ridge were presented.

  • Formal Design: There would be a main path with fingers to viewpoints and a trailhead marked by pavers. An irrigation system would be automatic to keep down the maintenance. Keep the existing trees. This design includes benches, garbage cans, cigarette disposal, doggie doo-doo bags, etc.

  • Informal Design (sustainable design): Use drought tolerant grass which doesn’t have to be mowed as often. It can grow to about 12 inches in height. This design shows a more curved path with native conifers. It also includes benches, garbage cans, cigarette disposal, doggie doo-doo bags, etc.

Look for a followup post with more media and details from the presentation to make your own decision. The final design will be developed and presented to the neighborhood in March.
